Clover review: choose the package and seller as carefully as the device
Clover is worth considering when the physical checkout setup is a major part of the decision. Its countertop and handheld family can suit different store layouts. The purchase, however, is a combination of hardware, software, processing and seller terms. This VoVi-owned review evaluates that combination through public documentation, not hands-on testing.

Start with the counter you actually operate
A compact counter, a busy customer-facing station and mobile selling on the shop floor create different equipment requirements. Clover’s device-led approach makes those choices visible early. Our editorial view is that it can be a good fit for a merchant who wants a defined physical setup and a supplier to discuss it with.
Bring measurements and a simple floor plan to the conversation. Check where the customer taps, where receipts emerge and whether a handheld can complete the same sale as the main station. A device that photographs well still has to fit the cable routes, charging routine and working space behind your counter.
There is no single Clover total
The US retail page distinguishes entry and larger retail configurations. Package, seller and purchasing arrangement matter, so we do not assign Clover a universal software fee or processing rate. A quote-only field means the price is unresolved, not zero.
Request one written schedule that separates software, device purchase or recurring equipment payments, processing, implementation, apps and taxes. Record the length of every agreement and what remains payable if you leave. Promotional periods should have both an end date and the price afterward. Compare the amount due over the intended operating period, including the cash required before opening.
Confirm where each feature comes from
Clover’s retail materials describe catalog variants, inventory, sales reporting and customer tools, with an app ecosystem for additional needs. That breadth is useful, but a capability described somewhere in the ecosystem is not automatically included in the proposed package.
Create a requirement sheet with three columns: included function, required app and unconfirmed item. Ask the seller to fill it out using the exact offer. Purchase orders, transfers, commission rules and accounting exports deserve particularly specific demonstrations. If an app supplies the answer, include its price, country availability and support contact in the same purchasing decision.
Test a return, not just a clean sale
A clean sale is the easy demonstration. Bring a more revealing sequence: sell two variants with a discount, split the payment if your business requires it, return one item and inspect the final inventory and tender records. Repeat under a cashier account with limited permissions.
For a second location, ask how stock availability, transfers and returns are represented. For online selling, determine which system owns product data and how a change reaches the other channel. We would prefer a clear, supported workflow over a long list of integrations whose responsibilities remain ambiguous.
Offline capability does not remove payment risk
Clover documents offline payment options for eligible configurations. A terminal may record a transaction without verifying that the card can ultimately be charged. The applicable settings, limits and merchant agreement therefore matter as much as the existence of an offline switch.
Ask the seller to show the actual outage procedure and the recovery queue. Identify who checks unresolved transactions afterward and how staff should avoid charging a customer twice. Test a loss of internet separately from a local device or network failure; those are different operational problems. Include the approved procedure in staff training before the first busy shift.
Buy for the local market
Clover’s developer documentation lists markets across North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific. That presence does not establish identical apps, devices or acquiring terms everywhere. A US bundle is not a quote for a shop in another country.
Ask the local supplier to confirm language needs, operating currency, tax settings, receipt requirements and payment methods. If your business crosses borders, request a written explanation of accounts and reporting. Do not assume that the same brand on two terminals means the same service agreement or shared administrative structure.
Where Clover earns its place
Shortlist Clover when its equipment and local package solve your counter requirements and the complete agreement is understandable. Compare VoVi for browser-based retail with included stock and staff tools; compare Shopify when online commerce dominates. We would choose the system whose exact configuration passes the store’s tests, rather than choosing from an attractive device price that omits the rest of the purchase.
